Our Story

History

Toyos Clinic was established in 1998 when Dr. Rolando Toyos was recruited by St. Judes Children's Hospital to staff a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Jackson, Tennessee.  Dr. Toyos was responsible for eye care at the NICU for 10 years and served as the Medical Director of the Jackson Madison Surgery Center.  He opened a clinic in Memphis when the Memphis Grizzlies asked him to be the team's ophthalmologist.

Melissa Toyos, MD was recruited by one the largest ophthalmology practices in country, Discover Vision in Kansas City where she became the first and only female partner. She became a partner in Toyos Clinic in 2014.

See Better Look Better

Toyos Clinic specializes in three areas - Vision, Optical, and Aesthetics.  Vision encompasses medical and surgical eye care including cataract surgery, glaucoma, dry eye, Lasik and SMILE, age related macular degeneration, keratoconus, strabismus, diabetic and hypertensive eye exams and more.  Optical services offer trained frame stylists to fit a wide variety of designer eyewear and our Optometrists are trained to fit both general and specialty contact lenses. Aesthetics includes medical weight loss, CO2 laser resurfacing, upper and lower lid blepharoplasty, injectables including filler, Botox, and Kybella, Intense Pulse Light, non-surgical body contouring, FUE hair transplantation, and our complete line of professional grade skin care products.

To stay current on what’s new in Ophthalmology the clinic established a research team led by Dr. Melissa Toyos to conduct FDA and other studies.  Our department has published many peer-reviewed articles and won countless awards and grants for our research such as the Lieberman Award, ASCRS Grant, Harold Stein Award, Earl Young Prize, and James Scholar Award.   Our research has contributed to technology and techniques that are currently utilized by eye care professionals around the world.

Dr. Rolando Toyos established an aesthetics clinic soon after starting Toyos Clinic.  It was in the Aesthetics Clinic that Dr. Toyos discovered that Intense Pulse Light could not only be used for conditions like Rosacea and for Facial Rejuvenation but that the technology could help patients with Dry Eye Disease.  Dr. Toyos developed IPL technology and protocols for Dry Eye Disease and Aesthetics.  In Kansas City at the same time Dr. Melissa Toyos was establishing an Aesthetics clinic and her own skin care line in her practice.  Both doctors have been at the forefront of Aesthetics.

We train other eye care professionals at Toyos Clinic with rotations for students from the Southern College of Optometry, University of Illinois Medical School and our combined refractive/aesthetic fellowship for surgeons.  Doctors from over 33 countries have come to study and observe the clinic’s systems and techniques.  We have grown from a single doctor and a single practice to six locations in Mississippi, Tennessee and New York.

We have used our success to provide care to the less fortunate in the community and abroad free of charge. We continue to strive towards excellence one patient at a time. Come see the difference at Toyos Clinic.

The Toyos Foundation

Toyos Clinic believes in giving back to the community financially and with the donation of our skills and time. The clinic has donated over one million dollars in money, services, and care.  No uninsured patient is turned away because they do not have the ability to pay.  Toyos Clinic proudly accepts Tenncare, Medicare, and Medicaid.

The Toyos Foundation is a 501c3 Non-Profit created by Doctors Rolando and Melissa Toyos to increase our ability to give back to the community.   Since the start of the clinic we have given free care through the Eye Care America Project established by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.  We have completed medical Mission Trips in Haiti, Nicaragua, and Honduras.  We received an award for our free medical and surgical Eye Care provided after Hurricane Katrina.  We are proud supporters of Disabled American Veterans, St. Jude, Alpha Omega Veterans Services, Eric and Jessie Decker Foundation, Houston High School, Houston Middle School, Germantown High School, Desoto Cardinals, SW Special Care, Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Middle Tennessee, and Predators Foundation, among others.
