Custom Cornea LASIK

LASIK is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses. Traditional LASIK surgery can provide good results in correcting a wide range of common vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. These vision problems are known as lower order aberrations.
Custom Cornea by LADARVision is a new kind of LASIK procedure which takes a similar approach and can help with many of the same visual problems. There are two reasons Custom Cornea is different. Custom Cornea is the first laser vision correction procedure to go beyond reshaping your cornea based on your prescription for eyeglasses or contacts. The procedure is completely customized to your eyes and your eyes alone. Secondly, Custom Cornea can help with other vision problems that could not be detected previously, known as higher order aberrations. Experts believe these aberrations can be responsible for vision problems like glare and halos in low-light conditions and at night.
Higher order aberrations cannot be treated by traditional laser vision correction procedures, or even by wearing glasses or contacts. In October 2002, Custom Cornea became the first laser vision correction procedure FDA approved to address higher order aberrations.
Using laser and radar technology developed by NASA, LADARVision was the first approved system with active eye tracking, which compensates for involuntary eye movements. LADARVision has the only system utilizing laser radar tracking technology, a system that measures eye movement 4,000 times each second. Furthermore, LADARVision's unique small-spot laser beam (less than one millimeter in diameter) offers micron size reshaping of the cornea, resulting in an extremely smooth surface.

The VISX laser system has always been at the forefront of laser research and design. Today, VISX advanced technology bring together the STAR S4 Excimer Laser System and the WaveScan Wavefront System creating the CustomVue Procedure.
The CustomVue procedure tailors a distinct correction for each individual. WaveScan technology captures unique imperfections in each individual’s vision that could not have been measured before. This new level of measurement provides 25-times more precision than measurements using standard methods for glasses and contact lenses. WaveScan technology produces a detailed map of the eye – much like a fingerprint, no two are alike and translates this information into a set of CustomVue treatment instructions for the laser. WaveScan transfers these digital treatment instructions to the laser, providing a new level of precision and accuracy.
Beyond Glasses and Contacts
- Glasses and contacts are limited in their ability to correct unique imperfections in each individual's vision. In fact, thousands of individuals have the same prescription. With the CustomVue procedure, no two “prescriptions” are identical.
- This precise level of measurement and treatment can enable individuals to achieve the full potential of their vision.
Clinical Study Results
VISX's FDA clinical study results were remarkable. Among other things:
- At one year after the VISX CustomVue procedure*;
- 100% of the clinical study participants could pass a driving test without glasses or contacts
- 98% of the clinical study participants could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contacts
- 70% of the clinical study participants could see 20/16 or better without glasses or contacts
- Four times as many clinical study participants were very satisfied with their night vision after the VISX CustomVue procedure, compared to their night vision before with glasses or contacts.
* FDA clinical results for Low to Moderate Myopia, Up to -6.0 D MRSE with or without astigmatism up to -3.0 D
