Laser Hair Reduction

How do lasers work to remove hair?

Hair reacts to light only during the active "anagen" phase of its growth cycle. For this reason, the laser is effective in causing hair loss only when it penetrates and interrupts the hair follicle during this phase. Lasers produce intense, concentrated beams of light energy of a single specific wavelength (color) traveling in one direction. Laser systems control and vary the intensity of light (measure in joules or watts) as well as its duration (measured in pulses).

Why use the Sciton Image Laser over other hair removal systems?

The Sciton Image Laser is specifically designed to safely and comfortably treat a broader range of skin tones, including patients with darker skin complexions. We have chosen this laser over other brands because of the extensive clinical and scientific research and the FDA's acknowledgment for its effectiveness of hair reduction.

How does the Sciton Image Laser remove hair?

This laser targets the pigment located in the hair follicle and shaft. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and this energy is converted to heat, which results in damage to the follicle. This damage causes delayed re-growth of the hair and, in most cases, permanent destruction of the hair follicles. Unlike electrolysis, which kills one follicle at a time, the laser treats hundreds of follicles at a time.

Does the procedure hurt?

The cooling tip of the laser has a mild anesthetic property, which allows tender areas to be treated more comfortably than other lasers. You may feel a tingling or stinging sensation during the treatment, but most people tolerate the procedure well. Some parts of the body do tend to be more sensitive than others. If you find the first treatment too uncomfortable, you can use Betacaine, a topical anesthetic.

How many treatments will I need?

Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time. In reality, they go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. The Sciton Image laser works by disabling the hair that is in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter the active growth phase at different times, additional treatments will be required to disable all hair follicles in a given area. Our staff will work with you to develop the best program that fulfills your needs. Treatments are usually given at different intervals, depending on the area being treated. We recommend six treatments for best results.

Are the results permanent?

The Sciton Image Laser causes permanent hair reduction and delayed re-growth of the treated hair follicles. A long-term clinical study was done to evaluate the Sciton Image Laser for hair removal. Of the 92 patients in the study, all had temporary hair loss and 89 percent had long-term hair loss. Also, re-growing hairs were shown to be thinner and lighter than previously growing hair. Because the laser tends to treat hair follicles that are in an active growth phase, more than one treatment will be required to disable hair follicles that subsequently enter this growth phase.

What happens after my treatment?

Within several minutes, the treated area may become slightly puffy and red. This reaction subsides quickly. Within a day or so, the areas return to normal. Depending on the areas treated, you should plan your work and social activities accordingly. Around 3-7 days after treatment, you may experience what seems to be re-growth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment and are not re-growing. In between treatments, you should not wax, pluck, have electrolysis, or use depilatories. However, it is permissible to shave.

Who is a good candidate for a laser treatment?

The ideal candidate for most hair removal lasers has dark hair and light skin. Darker hairs absorb more of the laser light and lighter skin allows more transmission of the laser light into the hair follicle.

How much does it cost?

Cost is determined by the size of the area, the number of body parts, and the thickness of hair. Consultations are recommended to best determine the most effective program. Price ranges per treatment can vary from $89.00 and up. Sometimes laser treatments have been perceived as a more expensive alternative for hair removal; conversely, laser treatments work out to be less expensive and more effective when you consider the long-term savings in time, discomfort, and money.
